The Japan Wood Research Society
(Nippon Mokuzai Gakkai)
The Japan Wood Research Society, established
in 1955, is a major academic research society
promoting the study of forest products science
and wood technology. The Society endeavors
to enhance both fundamental and applied research
activities in a wide range of research fields
including anatomy, biology, biotechnology,
chemistry , engineering and physics.
The membership includes faculty and students
of universities, researchers of institutes
or corporations, and administrators who are
concerned with the science and technology
of forest products. More than 2,200 individuals
as well as 200 private sectors and governmental
institutions, both within and outside of
Japan, join the Society. The Society has
four branches nation-wide to carry out more
effective local activities.
The Japan Wood Research Society is contributing,
by promoting active research in the field,
to a well balanced utilization and preservation
of forest resources in the light of present
global environmental concern.
The major activities of the Society include:
- Publication of Mokuzai Gakkaishi and Journal of Wood Science
- Mokuzai Gakkaishi is an official Japanese journal of the Society
and Journal of Wood Science is also an official English journal of the
Society. Each journal is published bimonthly and contains different original articles,
notes, preliminary reports and reviews, respectively.
- Organization of an annual national meeting
- The annual meeting is usually held in spring and attracts more than six hundred speakers
and a thousand participants, including overseas members.
- Organization of working groups on the following
thirteen specific research interests
- Wood-water Relations; Anatomy and Quality
of Wood; Wood-based Materials and Timber
Engineering; Bio-deterioration; Rheology;
Wood Machining; Extractives and Wood Utilization;
Chemical Processing of Wood; Pulp and Paper
Science; Mushrooms; Wood Adhesion; Reliability
in Wooden Environment; Chemical and Biochemical
Conversion of Biomass.
Seminars and lecture series are held on
the
themes of these working groups.
- Organization of studying groups on specific
themes which involves both academic circles
and industrial representatives
- Public relations and publications
- Publications include a quarterly bulletin
Woodience and many books on general and specific issues
of wood and forest products science and technology.
